Working under Muslim rule in and around Jerusalem during the 8th century AD, St. John of Damascus—defender of icons, theologian, poet and musician—composed a radiant hymn for Easter Sunday morning, his Paschal Canon.

Over the centuries his joyful verses praising the Resurrection of Christ have been adapted to countless languages and musical styles across a range of cultural traditions.

In tribute to Cappella Romana’s 20th Anniversary, scholars and composers who have made invaluable contributions to the international success of the ensemble will offer both ancient and modern musical settings of St. John’s masterpiece.

Latin American guitarist Alfredo Murro will be presenting a solo performance featuring various works of Latin America. Originally from Lima, Peru, Alfredo Murro’s elegant, sensitive and polished style have been honed by many years on the concert stages around the world.

His repertoire includes European Classical composers such as Bach, Handel, and Albeniz, Latin American Traditional Folklore, Latin Jazz, Caribbean, Bossa Nova and Samba, Andian, and Latin American Classical composers such as Villa-Lobos, Barios, Laureo and a touch of new flamenco.

Program featuring Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, with Provost Ralph Hexter as the narrator, and a work to be announced by the winner of the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition.

The Marin Music Chest presents its annual “Young Artists Concert” featuring selected classical student musicians honored with its 2012 scholarships awards.The concert, co-sponsored by the Mill Valley Chamber Music Society, features solo performances by Laura Arthur (soprano) and Caitlin Gowdy (violin), both of Novato; Kenji Bellavigna (clarinet) and RJ Pearce (piano), both of Corte Madera; and Colin Wells (flute) of San Anselmo.

Baroque Band’s season closes with one of the most strikingly original works of the Baroque repertoire, Rebel’s bold final work, the ballet Les Elemens.

Complementing Rebel’s chaotic opening, the program also includes Handel’s grand Concerto Grosso Op 3 No 2 and Telemann’s Ouverture des nations anciens et modernes.

Completing its season, Vox Musica performs SOLI: A Vox Recital. The members of Vox Musica include some of Sacramento’s most virtuosic, colorful, and dynamic vocalists. They are graduates of music programs at fine colleges and universities and are professional musicians and teachers throughout the Sacramento area.

This project will highlight their individual talents and provide our patrons a rare opportunity to hear selected members perform as soloists, singing Romantic Arias, Baroque duets, German art-songs, and Jazz standards, as well as Folk and Bluegrass pieces.

Members of Vox Musica will be accompanied by pianist Steven Johnson.

Learn & Hear: Join us before the concert for our pre-concert talk which will focus on the skills and techniques singers use in order to perform in an ensemble versus as a soloist, and will include a meet and greet with the ladies of Vox.

The Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra presents its 46th Season Final Concert featuring a program from Baroque to Modern music as conducted by Benjamin Simon. From the glorious, golden Baroque to our edgy modern existence, our program illustrates the beauties of classical music’s past and our future-in-the-making. Ascending violin superstar, Ariana Kim makes her PACO debut in J.S. Bach’s Violin Concerto in E major, and we present the world premiere of Elizabeth Ogonek’s Window Watchers. In between, we celebrate Giacchino Rossini’s leap-year birthday with his lovely String Sonata No. 2, and celebrate our amazing viola section with the luscious Nachtstück by the romantic Max von Weinzierl. In addition, several movements from the great chamber music masterpieces will be performed by our most advanced players.

The Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra's Sinfonia presents the PACO 2011 Concerto Competition Winners at its Finale Event of the 46th Season. Conducted by PACO Music Director, Benjamin Simon, we invite you to come and see young talent from the San Francisco Peninsula shine as the winners of the 2011 PACO Concerto Competition are showcased in this signature event. Ranging in age from nine to sixteen years old, their music will move you, their enthusiasm will inspire you, and their collective performances are sure to leave you feeling uplifted. Featured soloists are Sabrina Kim, Caleb Yang, Julianne Oh, Dylan Dreyer, Camden Thomas Boyle and Alvin Kim. The program will also include chamber music repertory performed by small ensembles of Sinfonia members.

Scott Tennant is a founding member of the Grammy®-winning ensemble L.A. Guitar Quartet, and is himself considered to be one of the world’s top classical guitarists.

He is well-known for his recordings of the music of Joaquín Rodrigo, and equally praised for his interpretations of the music from the renaissance and classical periods. Upcoming projects include a five-volume classical guitar method, a recording/tribute to the late maestro Andrés Segovia, as well as instructional videos on advanced guitar techniques.
